The Three Lions to Begin the European Championship 2028 Journey at City’s Home Ground

England’s men’s team will initiate their Euro 2028 journey at the Etihad Stadium, assuming they attain the anticipated entry for a championship staged throughout most of the United Kingdom and the Ireland.

The Etihad Stadium has not staged an England men’s match since May 2016, when the Turkish team were overcome 2-1 in a friendly, but is almost certain to host the national team for their first match on Saturday 10 June 2028.

England are scheduled to play their last two group stage games at Wembley Stadium, but, in the event of winning their group, their round of 16 match would be held at St James’ Park. Placing second would mean starting the playoffs at Everton’s Hill Dickinson Stadium.

Competition Launch and Demonstration

The event was inaugurated at an gathering in central London on Wednesday night. Key representatives from the tournament organizers and the host FAs were confronted as they arrived the site by approximately 50 activists, who urged Israel to be kicked out from the sport because of the conflict in Gaza.

Banners were raised with phrases stating “Show Israel the red card” and “You are complicit”, while demonstrators called out: “Kick Israel out.”

Championship Timeline

The opening game of Euro 2028 will be played at the Principality Stadium in the Welsh capital, on June 9, 2028, a game that will feature the Dragons if they make it.

Wembley Stadium will host both semi-finals and the title decider, which will be held on Sunday 9 July with a start time at late afternoon.

It is hoped that an afternoon start, which will also be used for Champions League finals from the following campaign, will attract family audiences and help reach a broader range of audiences.

Host Nations

The Ireland are set to play their initial fixture at the Aviva Stadium and the Scottish team would do the same at the national stadium of Scotland.

The national sides of all four hosts will participate in the qualifying tournament; two reserved places will be set aside for any that do not reach the tournament through that route.

Venues and Elimination Phase

Villa Park and The North London arena finalize the event’s nine venues. All will hold at least one playoff fixture, with the last eight played at the national stadium of each host.

The draw for the qualifiers will be staged in the Northern Irish capital, which was dropped as a tournament location last year when it was revealed the Belfast stadium could not be renovated in time, on December 6, 2026.

Leadership Comment

“This will be a tournament for the followers and a celebration of everything we love about the football – its fervor and capacity to bring people together.”

Over 3 million tickets, a unprecedented number for a UEFA European Championship, are expected to be released to attendees.
