The former Liverpool manager says coming back to lead Liverpool is plausible in theory.
Jurgen Klopp, who departed from Liverpool in 2024, indicated that rejoining the club is something that could happen. Klopp, after a transformative near-decade reign that included a European Cup triumph and the Premier League crown in 30 years, now holds roles in a global football capacity for Red Bull and as an advisor with the German Football League.
Supporters’ Hopes and His Frank Comments
They secured the league title under Arne Slot, but many fans holding him in high esteem would be thrilled by the notion that he might come back one day. During an extensive chat, he told his interviewer: “I stated I refuse to lead a different club in England. Which implies in case it's my former club...absolutely. Theoretically it’s possible.”
“Being 58, which suggests the choice could be mine down the line, who knows. Do I have to make the decision today? Then I will not coach again. Luckily, no such pressure exists. I'll simply watch how things unfold.”
What Would Lure Him Back?
Questioned regarding the specific conditions would need to occur to draw him back to management, Klopp admitted he feels no immediate pull for a comeback. “I don’t even know exactly, I enjoy my current role,” he stated. “No longing for management; No desire to be during downpours for two-and-a-half or three hours; I don’t miss going to media briefings repeatedly each week or constant media duties a week.
“The locker room isn't missed in that context, but sitting in a restaurant with the team enjoying conversation, that’s nice. We won a lot of games thus frequently a very good mood at the club. Remaining with me is Virgil [Van Dijk’s] laugh ringing in my ears to illustrate.”
Praise for His Successor
Klopp was full of praise of the current boss, praising him for the adjustments that won the league in the previous season. The team has suffered four consecutive matches across various tournaments following significant transfers, yet he dismissed the idea of it representing the start of a downward turn.
“[Liverpool have] a top-class attacker like Florian Wirtz, critics will regret if you use the wrong words. He’s an incredible talent. [Hugo] Ekitike, superb talent. This is a well-built thoughtfully assembled roster. You don’t have to worry about Liverpool, they will be fine.”
Heartfelt Words for the Late Forward
Klopp also spoke emotionally regarding the passing of Jota, whom he brought in in 2020, and the effect on Liverpool. The Portugal international lost his life in a car crash together with his sibling this past summer.
“How do you replace such an individual? This isn't just regarding his on-field talent, his personality mattered. I struggle to conceive the dressing room missing him. I still cannot speak properly on this topic. A profound tragedy for the entire squad as well. Nobody at Liverpool will ever use it to justify results though it's a fact. Entering the changing area where his spirit remains. Coping with it emotionally is not easy. Unbearable.”
