The Former French President to Pen Jail Diary Chronicling Three Weeks Incarcerated

Nicolas Sarkozy is preparing a personal account next month called Notes from a Cell, chronicling his time served in custody.

The revelation was made just 11 days after the former president left prison while he contests the court ruling related to criminal conspiracy connected to efforts to obtain election campaign funds provided by the government of the late Libyan dictator.

Prison Experience: Personal Reflections

“Inside jail one sees little, with little to occupy time,” he reflects in a preview, implying the account will focus on his musings from seclusion instead of a broader observation regarding the overcrowded and crisis-hit jail system in France.

“Quiet is absent, which doesn’t exist at the prison, where one hears endless commotion,” he states. “The racket is alas constant. But, just like the desert, one’s inner world grows stronger while incarcerated.”

Release Hearing: Sharing the Struggle

At his release request hearing, the former leader was present remotely from a room in prison, characterizing his incarceration as exhausting. He stated to the judge: “I wish to commend the correctional officers, displaying remarkable compassion, and who have made this ordeal manageable – because it is a nightmare.”

“I didn’t expect that in my seventies, I’d find myself behind bars. It’s a hardship I must endure. I admit it’s difficult, extremely tough. It has an impact all who experience it due to its intensity.”

Historical Context

He, who led the nation from 2007 to 2012, became the inaugural ex-leader of an EU country and the initial post-WWII figure in the French Republic to be incarcerated.

Prior to imprisonment he had said he intended to spend the period to write a book.

Books in Prison

It remains unclear did he manage to read and critique the volumes he took into prison: a biography of Jesus in two parts plus the novel by Dumas the famous story, where a wrongfully accused individual is imprisoned then breaks out to exact retribution.

Daily Reality

Sarkozy remained in solitary confinement due to safety concerns in a space roughly 100 square feet with his own shower and toilet in the Paris jail located in the capital. Guards were stationed in a neighbouring cell.

Reports indicated that he had eaten only yoghurts while inside because he feared meals provided might have been spat on. Options were available to prepare his own meals yet he declined, based on unnamed sources. Unclear remains if he will detail his dietary choices.

Defense Viewpoint

His attorney, who visited his client each day during the incarceration, stated during proceedings security would be better out of prison rather than in custody. “There were menacing messages, heard shouts after dark and the urgent intervention in a neighbouring cell when a prisoner self-harmed.”

Charges and Sentence

Sarkozy went to prison last month when a Paris court imposed a five-year sentence for illegal collaboration in connection with efforts to acquire campaign funds during his election campaign.

He maintains his innocence challenging the decision, and a fresh trial planned for early next year.
