The fast bowler Poised for a Significant Contribution in Ashes Series

Pat Cummins bowling

The Australian skipper has secured 309 Test scalps in 71 Test matches with an average of 22.10.

Australia's selection chief the selector has stated that captain Pat Cummins will play a "major part" in the upcoming Ashes series.

Speculation had been growing that Cummins might miss the series due to a persistent back stress problem that remained unresolved.

Previous updates from the squad suggested no final decision had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the extended contest kicking off on the 21st of November in Western Australia.

Bailey expressed that his recovery is on track and remained hopeful about his chances of being involved.

"We know that time is getting short and multiple considerations at play, not just the back issue, but additional elements," Bailey remarked.

"It's positive. [We are] really confident that he will feature a significant role. With luck it's the first Test. If not, we'll adjust."

Past Concerns

He was sidelined the ODI and T20 games against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals recently after medical tests showed a lumbar bone stress.

There is a track record of back injuries, with setbacks in multiple past seasons causing him to miss three Australian summers in four years.

The bowler mentioned he would be bold in recovery efforts in his recovery plan to ensure his availability for the series.

He mentioned that there was no confirmation if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his comeback but acknowledged it was "getting tight" for him to regain fitness for the opener.

Backup Options

In case of absence, veteran batsman Smith will lead the side.

Versatile player Green was withdrawn recently from the ODI lineup for their ODI contests against the Asian giants as a preventive step because of an abdominal issue.

The selector characterized it as a "small issue and stated that he's scheduled to appear in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "ideally positioned to resume bowling."

"Extensive planning has gone into developing the strategy for him to participate for the first Test as an dual-role player," Bailey explained.

"Originally, he'd only feature in the initial matches anyway. How he handles the bat in limited-overs, if it causes any delay for another day, the choice was made to take a cautious route."
