New York Unveils Portal for Residents to Share ICE Images Following Detentions of Four US Citizens
New York state attorney general has rolled out a fresh reporting form encouraging locals to provide visual evidence of immigration raids throughout New York. This action comes just a shortly after a high-profile enforcement action shook NYC's Chinatown, prompting mass demonstrations.
US Citizens Detained In Enforcement Action
A lawmaker announced during a Wednesday press conference that four citizens were detained and kept for "about 24 hours" after the previous day's operation. Rallies occurred in NYC on consecutive evenings.
"All New York residents has the right to reside free from terror," the attorney general wrote in a announcement.
"Anyone who observed and captured federal operations yesterday, I urge you to provide that evidence with us. We are pledged to assessing these submissions and investigating any wrongdoings."
Portal Features
The platform provides fields to submit images and video footage of the raid, plus a field to specify location information. When submitting, individuals must tick a box that confirms that "authorities may use any documents, photographs, or videos in a public document, such as in a lawsuit or public report."
Details of the ICE Action
The enforcement action, which observers say included more than 50 federal agents, occurred in a famous neighborhood of Manhattan where counterfeit purses, items, goods and additional items are commonly traded en masse – often to tourists.
Footage of the incident reveal several hooded and equipped officers zip-tying and detaining a man, and shoving away bystanders. Throngs of New Yorkers trailed the agents down the sidewalks. An military-style transport was observed moving along the Manhattan avenues.
Official Reactions
During a Wednesday press conference held with the New York immigrant rights coalition, congressman Dan Goldman, a Democrat, said that four nationals were detained by ICE for almost a full day and that there were "no situations where US citizens should be arrested for without cause." He clarified the individuals were released on the following day with no accusations made.
"The intent is obvious here. It is not about removing offenders," Goldman said. "This represents a militarized effort to incite tension. It is merely a excuse to generate turmoil for this administration to utilize the armed forces to stop violence that they initiated."
Widespread Condemnation
Fury over the ICE raid rapidly grew – each of the political contenders denounced the incident, as did Governor Kathy Hochul.
"Repeatedly, the Trump administration chooses heavy-handed tactics that instill panic, not safety. It needs to cease," a contender declared.
NYC advocacy organizations spoke out as well.
"ICE descended on Chinatown in NYC with military-style vehicles, masked agents and tactical gear to target street vendors attempting to earn income. This raid had no connection to public safety and everything to do with intimidating residents and neighborhoods," stated the leader of a major immigrant coalition.
Agency Rules
Agency rules forbids the detention of US citizens and the agency has said it will not arrest or detain citizens. Yet, independent reporting has revealed that numerous American nationals have been held against their will by federal agents during the period of the current administration.
Current Situation
Enforcement actions have been rising in frequency in NY and nationwide lately.
An October operation in midtown Manhattan was the first known raid on an immigrant shelter of the present government. Demonstrations opposing immigration enforcement are ubiquitous including claims of aggression and cruel conditions.
Latest, a document submitted by advocacy organizations stated healthcare failures of expectant mothers in detention centers.
