LA Battles Record-Breaking Heat Just Days After Severe Winter Weather.
After enduring torrential rains that caused flooding across parts of the city, LA is now seeing unseasonably hot conditions for this time of year.
Record-Shattering Readings
During the day Friday, the mercury soared to 33 degrees Celsius (91 Fahrenheit) in the city center, according to the National Weather Service. This breaks the old record for this date, which was 88°F (31°C) and was established just last year.
"Unusually high temperatures" were highlighted on forecast charts for the region.
Public Health Warnings
Authorities stated that Friday's heat posed an "higher threat for heat illness" for those at risk. Their advice included:
- Drinking plenty of fluids.
- Limiting outdoor activities during the hottest part of the day.
- Not leaving children or pets unattended in a parked vehicle.
An Extreme Shift
This dramatic increase in heat follows closely after a powerful winter storm that struck the state last week. That system unleashed thunderstorms, high winds, and heavy snow to the mountains, leading to evacuation orders for countless residents.
Sadly, the conditions also triggered a massive avalanche in the Lake Tahoe area, which resulted in nine fatalities.
Weekend Outlook
Forecasters predict a cooldown is coming. The heat were expected to drop to around 61°F (16°C) in the city by Friday night.
Other locales that reached ninety degrees were Woodland Hills, Long Beach, and Burbank. Additionally, Westwood, Camarillo, Santa Maria, and Oxnard were projected to see the high 80s.
For the weekend, central Los Angeles can see temperatures in the eighties, with mid-70s temperatures likely for the following week.
