Information Available Regarding the Victims of the Bondi Beach Terror Attack

No fewer than 16 people perished and over 40 sustained injuries when assailants shot at a Hanukah gathering at Bondi Beach, an incident local authorities have labeled a terrorist attack.

As of the newest reports, authorities have stated the number of fatalities stands at 16, which includes one of the suspected attackers. Moreover, 42 injured people were taken to the hospital.

Those who died have not yet been formally identified, but authorities state their ages span between 10 and 87 years old.

Here are the individuals who have been identified to date.

Eli Schlanger

London-born rabbi Eli Schlanger, 41, was initially identified.

Described as a father of five children, he worked as the associate rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Family members and friends spoke of him as “vivacious, energetic, full of life and a very kind and sociable person who was dedicated to assisting others”.

“How can a happy rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, have his life ended in this way?” a relative asked.

Schlanger and his wife had recently celebrated the birth of their youngest child just a few months ago.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman was also among those killed, as stated by his wife.

She recounted the moments leading up to the shooting, stating they had been standing together when the gunfire started. “He pushed his body up because he wished to be near me,” she stated.

The husband and wife were both Holocaust survivors, having endured unspeakable terror in their childhood. They had subsequently relocated to Australia from Eastern Europe.

Dan Elkayam

French foreign ministry have confirmed that French national Dan Elkayam is a casualty.

Officially, the Foreign Minister said that France stood with his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This despicable act is a new, tragic manifestation of a disgusting rise of hatred against Jews that we must combat,” the message continued.

One Child

A child who was taken to the Sydney Children’s Hospital has been confirmed among the fatalities, according to police reports.

One Israeli Citizen

One victim from Israel was also killed during the attack, as per multiple sources referencing the Israeli government.

Those Injured

From the 42 people transported to hospital, many remain receiving treatment, with several in critical condition. Those hurt include two police officers who attended the scene.

A wounded man is a bystander who attempted to intervene to tackle one of the attackers. Described as a hero, he received gunshot wounds but is in stable condition in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a public affairs professional. Sources state he was injured and underwent treatment in hospital.

In a message, he described the incident as an “horrific scene,” but also praised the response of those who rushed to help. He stated he believed it was a “stroke of luck” he was alive.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a community director, was also injured in the shooting. He said he heard “dozens and dozens” of shots.

“Initially, I believed it was rubber bullets, but it penetrated my own skin and into my leg,” he said. “I’ve been shot myself. They bandaged me up. I’m ok.”
