She reiterated this viewpoint at an IMF gathering in Washington, noting that the national efficiency issue has been worsened by the manner in which the UK left the European Union.

This was a precisely formulated statement, assigning damage not to the departure decision but to its execution; faulting the politicians who negotiated it, not the public who supported it. This distinction will be crucial when the financial plan is unveiled next month. The aim is to attribute some fiscal difficulties to the agreement reached under previous leadership without seeming to disrespect the hopes of leave voters.

Economic Evidence and Professional Assessment

For those who value evidence, the financial debate is mostly resolved. The Office for Budget Responsibility estimates that Britain's long-term productivity is 4% lower than it would have been with continued EU membership.

Policy differences between the main opponents are minimal, but voters notice personal rivalry more than ideological alignment. Supporters of Nigel Farage due to distrust in establishment—especially on border policy—don't see Reform and the Tories as aligned groups. One party has a record of allowing immigration, while the other does not—a contrast Farage will repeatedly emphasize.

Changing Discourse and Future Strategy

The Reform leader is less eager to talk about EU exit, in part since it is a achievement jointly owned with Tories and partly because there are few benefits to showcase. If challenged, he may argue that the goal was sabotaged by flawed implementation, but even that explanation admits failure. Easier to change the subject.

This explains why Labour feels more confident raising the issue. Starmer's recent party conference speech marked a turning point. Previously, he had discussed UK-EU relations in dry, technical terms, focusing on a partnership renewal that targeted non-controversial trade barriers like border inspections while avoiding the divisive cultural issues at the core of the post-referendum turmoil.

During his address, the PM did not fully embrace pro-EU arguments, but he hinted at awareness of previous assertions. He referenced "Brexit lies on the side of the campaign vehicle"—alluding to exit supporters' vows about health service money—in the context of "snake oil" sold by leaders whose simplistic answers exacerbate the nation's problems.

Leaving Europe was equated with Covid as difficult experiences endured by ordinary people in the past period. Comparing Brexit to a disease indicates a hardening of rhetoric, even if the economic measures currently under discussion in Brussels remain the same.

Opposition Criticism and Administrative Challenges

The objective is to link the Reform leader to a notorious case of deceptive campaigning, implying he is unreliable; that he exploits discontent and sows division but cannot manage effectively.

Recent suspensions of four Kent councillors from Reform's local government team supports that message. Recorded videos of a video conference showed internal disputes and recrimination, demonstrating the challenges inexperienced figures face when delivering public services on limited budgets—far tougher than distributing leaflets about cutting waste or managing borders.

This line of attack is productive for the government, but it depends on the administration's own performance being sufficiently strong that electing Reform seems a risky gamble. Moreover, this is a message for a future campaign that may not occur until the end of the decade. If Starmer and Reeves wish to be seen as alternatives to populism, they must demonstrate in the interim with a positively defined agenda of their own.

Final Thoughts

There are limits to what can be achieved with a change in tone, and the clock is ticking. It would be simpler to make the case today that Brexit is an affliction and his promoter untrustworthy if they had said so earlier. What additional choices might they have? Do they merit praise for admitting it now when other excuses have failed? Certainly. But the problem of arriving at the evident truth via the most circuitous route is that observers wonder the procrastination. Beginning with honesty is faster.
