Adult Swim's Leading Fresh Series of This Year Secures a Major Renewal for Seasons 2 and 3.

Last October, the late-night programming block debuted a new season of its unconventional hit, Smiling Friends. But, not long after, the network launched a fresh animated series with a distinctly unique vibe. Haha, You Clowns emerged as sweet and soothing, in the spirit of a cartoon version of a laid-back talk show. During a period often characterized by bleakness, this show's wholesomeness found an audience and turned it into a surprise hit.

A Significant Investment

On December 18th, the network made a major announcement: Haha, You Clowns has been renewed for two additional seasons. This offers showrunner Joe Cappa a massive runway to develop the story of the Campbell family. The show centers on three polite teenage brothers whose central trait is their deep love for their widowed father, with Cappa voicing for all four central characters.

"I am incredibly thankful to the audience of the show who took a chance on the show and spread the word," stated Cappa. "I am overjoyed that I get to continue exploring the Campbell household for the foreseeable future."

Executive Acclaim

Accompanying the news laudits from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who called the series as "profoundly sincere and uniquely eerie." He thanked the fans who found the show and championed its uniquely offbeat style.

"All of you got behind this new show, rooted for it on social media, and grew it week over week so we could greenlight not one, but two more seasons," said Ouweleen. "In the words: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"

A Different Kind of Comedy

When it first aired, Haha, You Clowns was described as "a comforting antidote" to other adult animated fare. It offers something surprisingly comfy about following this lovable family go about their everyday routines.

In earlier interviews, creator Joe Cappa stated his desire to help comedy break out of its current sarcastic tone. He linked this trend to various cultural shifts.

“There's this level of irony that we keep returning to,” explained Cappa. “The attitude is that we have to know we’re the cleverest viewer in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for 10 years, and we just have to laugh at something different now. The genre needs to change.”

The Path Forward

Now, with Haha, You Clowns locked in for the future, Cappa has the opportunity to catalyze that change he described. At a minimum, the renewal guarantees audiences additional episodes to bask in the gentle humor of the endearing Campbell clan.

The season 1 finale of Haha, You Clowns is scheduled to air on December 21st. The entire series is ready to watch on HBO Max.
