A Tale of Surprising Generosity: The Time a University Student Let Me Stay on Her Dorm Floor

Back in 2006, My journey took me to Canberra for an admissions interview for medical school. My plan was to book a place to stay upon arrival, but upon reaching the city, a major event was taking place and every single budget hostels and cheap hotels had no vacancies.

As a visitor from Singapore, I thought the possibility of bed down in the terminal – but quickly found the local airport, in contrast to Changi Airport, does not operate 24 hours. With no idea how to proceed and getting a bit desperate, I hopped on a bus into town and began walking in the direction of a gaming venue, believing it was a place to spend the evening in an establishment that was open 24/7. Admittedly, this plan at my peak for acing an interview the next morning, yet, as a broke student, luxury accommodation was impossible.

The world needs more folks like that woman.

It seems I seemed out of place because a woman noticed me wandering around the city and inquired if everything was alright. I recounted the story of my accommodation crisis and right away she offered I could sleep on the floor in her student dorm at ANU – an ideal turn of events, given that my the important interview was the following day. Generously, she also provided a meal: a leftover sandwiches she brought back her work shift. I had access to warm shower facilities and somewhere safe to rest to sleep.

Looking back, I now understand the enormous leap of faith she undertook being a woman inviting a man who was a complete stranger sleep on her floor. In those days I was in a bubble of male privilege and not even thinking about things like that. Now, as a father, I’m amazed she did that – yet deeply appreciative.

Ultimately, I did not go to that university, and I lost touch with her again, but I’ve never forgotten that incredible gesture of generosity. My sincere desire is that karma has returned her generosity tenfold. The world needs more individuals who show such kindness.
